Elders = Amateur Lawyers | Case Study Marriage Separation - Society scolded
by confusedjw inwhile serving as an elder we had a sister who was moving to another congregation in conjunction with separating from her husband.. another brother and i had been working with them for many weeks and were asked to send a letter to the new congregation, commenting on the situation and scriptural validity of the separation.. the situation was that she claimed he was endangering her and cited one physical incident where she hid behind a door and playfully jumped out to scare him, he reacted by striking out with his arm and hit her in the shoulder.
she admitted he was very sorry about the incident, but she suspected he somewhat did it on purpose.
she also brought up several situations in there marriage of him not taking the lead and weird behavior.

From reading CoC it would seem that there's an "oral law" in the form of letters from the Service Dept to various elderss and publishers regarding specific questions; advice and direction that would never be printed in their publications for the masses to see. This information often contradicts the society's current position or doctrine with a kind of "wink,wink" or "it's up to the individual's conscience" carte blanche.
My guess on the reason for this is that they don't want masses of people thinking for themselves "on the basis of conscience." In this case, a lot of separations without the elders' interference would quite possibly ensue. So, in practice, they allow the elders great power and influence unless someone writes the Society and then their main focus is covering their legal butts!

Every story I hear just makes me more and more convinced that this is not and never was "God's organization." I wish you and your family well. Being on the "inside" can't be easy now that you know the truth about "the truth."
The nice thing is you have people here that will support you with their unconditional love and well wishes.

So, we chatted about family and just got caught up. Then I asked if she was still studying with the witnesses. She said they were and they're almost done the Knowledge Book. I asked her what she thought about what she was learning. She said, "I think it's the truth." She then went on to relate how every witness she's met since arriving from China to Canada has been such a wonderful person. And her family had recently even encouraged another new immigrant family to study with the witnesses in their area. Ugh! I didn't know what to say next.
She asked about me..if I had any new bible studies. I said, "I am no longer one of Jehovah's Witnesses. There were many teachings that I no longer agreed with."
She said she respected my decision and loved me. She mentionned having spoke with the sister from my congregation who used to go on their studies with me. I told my former study that that sister was no longer speaking to me, as is the witness practice when someone leaves the religion. I told her about the shunning practice. I told her that all my lifetime friends no longer speak to me. She had no idea about shunning. She was disgusted.
I told her that I knew it would happen yet I decided to leave anyways because I could not, in good conscience, pretend to believe something I didn't believe. She agreed with my actions and said we'd keep in touch. She gave me her email address. I was thinking about sending her the information from the wts pubs about shunning. I think she should know before she goes any further.

As for the paragraph issue, if you're using regular spacing and not html code you have to check only the Automatic Cr/Lf box at the bottom before you post. Hope this works for you. I'm on a Mac and I'm still trying to sort everything out with the formatting because apparently this site thinks Macs are evil. :)

This reminds me of an email I got from my Presiding Overseer just before I left "inviting" me to a shepherding call. After I told him numerous times that I was not up to it and felt harassed by what I felt to be unloving and un-Christian behaviour, his response in part was,
